Commissions FAQs
When will your commissions open?
The best place to receive regular updates from me is on Instagram. When I open commissions, I’ll announce it there!
Do you accept custom requests?
Custom requests are my favourite! If you have an idea in mind, I’m all ears.
Are you open to repeating your existing designs?
I’m always happy to repeat existing designs, however I do tend to prefer creating designs that feel new to me and tailoring each piece to the recipient. If there’s a specific piece of mine you love, depending on what it is, I may seek to alter some elements (ie colour palette, motifs, silhouette) to better fit your personal style.
How does your commission process work?
When I open commissions, I’ll announce it via my Instagram and on my website. I will ask you to submit a commission request (a form that you fill out) detailing what you’re looking for (the more detail the better — inspo photos are always appreciated).
Due to the high number of requests I receive, I am only able to respond to those I want to accept. If you don’t hear back from me, I encourage you to submit another request the next time I open my commissions!
If your request is accepted, I’ll reach out to discuss the details and design concept with you. I will also collect a portion of the final price as a non-refundable deposit before I start knitting.
How much does a commission cost?
I price each piece individually based on several different factors, including cost of materials, complexity, size, & time. I will let you know the final price in our initial conversations and before you send the deposit. For a ballpark idea:
- Small accessories (hair bows, everyday scrunchies, etc): $40-80 CAD + shipping
- Medium items (socks, mitts, hats, hoods, sm-med scarves, statement scrunchies): $100-350 CAD + shipping
- Large items (sweaters, cardigans, vests, lg scarves): $600-1500 CAD +shipping
How do I pay?
E-transfers are preferred but Paypal is also an option.
How long will it take for a commissioned piece to be finished?
As this is what I do in my spare time, how long it takes me to finish a piece depends on many factors! In our initial conversations, I’ll give you an estimated time frame ranging from a week or two for small accessories and 1-4 months for medium to large pieces. However this is only an estimate — sometimes I surprised myself and complete a piece much faster than I anticipate, and sometimes it takes me a little longer. Throughout the process I welcome questions, and will, of course, post progress photos on my social media!
Will I get to see the design beforehand?
In our initial discussions, I will provide a detailed design concept, often with sample colour palettes and sometimes rough sketches. If you are commissioning a piece based on a previous design of mine, you will of course be able to look at photos of those pieces. For custom pieces, I hope that you have taken a look at my work and trust that I will be able to realise your idea in my style.
I want to commission a piece from you but I don’t know what I want!
That is A-okay! All I ask is that you have a general idea of the size of piece you’d like. Beyond that, I’m happy to show you concepts for pieces I’d like to design and see which idea speaks to you. Or, if you’d like to take a look at my existing designs, you’re welcome to peruse my portfolio or Instagram
Where do you ship and how much does it cost?
I’ll ship anywhere! The shipping costs are added to the final price of the commission.
What materials do you use?
I tend to gravitate to natural fibers, including wool, mohair, alpaca, and silk.
How should I take care of a handknit piece from you?
Wool is naturally antimicrobial, breathable, and odor resistant — the less you wash wool garments and handknits, the longer they will last. Unless visibly dirty, I recommend washing wool garments once a year before you store them for the summer. If a wool garment smells, lay it outside in fresh air for a day or two.
To wash handknit pieces from me (and most other items knit with animal fibers), start by soaking in cool water for at least 30m with rinse-free soap (I prefer Eucalan). Drain and gently squeeze the garment to get rid of excess water — do not wring. Roll it up in a dry towel and use your body weight to press as much of the remaining moisture out as possible. Lay flat to dry. When the garment is damp, be sure not to pull on it or hang/dangle it unless you’re wanting to stretch it out. Store handknits folded.
Do you sell patterns?
Not at the moment, but it’s something I’m considering for the future.
Do you accept trades?
If you’re also an artist or craftsperson interested in trading for a piece of mine, I’m all ears!
